The U.S Open is one of the most important tennis tournaments in the world and always promises competitive matches, but sometimes offers controversy as well. This happened in the women’s final, when a competitive match between Serena Williams and Naomi Osaka ended with Serena Williams screaming at the line judge and refusing to shake his hand.

Serena Williams was given a warning after her coach was caught giving her hand signals during the match, which was perceived as cheating. Williams then had a heated discussion with the line judge after giving this warning as she took it as a slap in the face and an insult to her character. Later in the match she lost an important point to Osaka that tied the set and smashed her racquet into the ground. This resulted in a point penalty and another argument between Williams and the line judge. After another rule violation a game was given to Osaka, giving her a big enough lead to win the match, and in result, the tournament.

The events in this U.S Open final sparked controversy all over the nation as Serena Williams made a claim of sexism, saying that this “wouldn’t have happened had she been a man”. A lot of people agreed because the line judge in question had only worked men’s matches before and never done anything like this with them. She has since apologized but the damage has already been done to his reputation. It is likely that he will never be hired to work another women’s match in his career and will forever be considered the sexist line judge.

Many people sympathize with the line judge, but others say he deserves the situation he’s in. That being said, many people will never view Serena Williams the same.
